UPDATE: 5/18/2020: Serrano ASB has announced a drive through Diploma Celebration which will be held on the morning of June 4th which will be followed by the Virtual Graduation that evening.
Prom and Gradnite have both been canceled because of social distancing restrictions. Refund checks are expected to be available by May 26 & 27 and can be picked up during the Senior book/material return scheduled for those days. Only students or parents will be able to pick up checks and must present their ID.
Snowline JUSD has announced graduation plans for the class of 2020. The district has been working hard with Serrano High School to develop a plan for a virtual graduation and senior celebration.
Senior year is a special time filled with many time honored traditions, cherished memories and appreciation for a job well done. For the class of 2020, their senior year has been drastically changed as a result of school closures and social distancing. Many seniors were left wondering if they were even going to get to graduate, walk across the stage and receive their diploma in front of their peers, teachers and parents. Wondering how they are going to celebrate this momentous once in a lifetime occasion.
Heading up the effort, Serrano Principal Dr. Willie Jones and A.S.B. Director Scott Cornell have burned the midnight oil to come up with graduation plans for the class of 2020. Working along side students, administrators, and even Superintendent Dr. Ryan Holman seniors will gain those one in a lifetime memories of graduation in the best way possible given the current social distancing restrictions.
On June 4, 2020 at 7pm Serrano will host a live broadcast of a virtual graduation. There will be pre-recoreded segments from Dr. Holman, Dr. Jones, the salutatorian and valedictorian just to name a few. Students will have an opportunity before the broadcast to prerecord messages which will act as their “15 minutes of fame.” And these will also be broadcast. It is all still in the works, but much is being planned for this event. The entire production is being produced by companies that have hand much experience in these types of virtual events.
After graduation, hopefully, sometime between July 30th and August 6th from 12:00 to 9:00pm Serrano will host a Senior Celebration. The event is contingent upon current social distancing restrictions being lifted or modified, but the event will happen. Activities throughout the day may include a more traditional type graduation, a seal of Bi-literacy ceremony, scholarship ceremony, and athletic ceremony. There are plans for a DJ and dance, various performing arts acts on stage, movie spot, game areas, indoor and outdoor yearbook signing areas, all kinds of food, themed places to hangout, picture areas with backdrops and the senior sunset and fireworks show. It is all still being planned and depends on funding, county guidelines, and vendor availability.
Other Schools such as Chaparral and Eagle Summit have postponed their in-person graduation for a time to be determined.
